Packaging companies in June publicized more than 1,000 planned U.S. layoffs, appearing to exceed the hundreds announced in May. Glass, paper and plastic packaging producers announced some key footprint changes.
- Ardagh in June announced 464 planned layoffs across two glass packaging production facilities in Houston and Seattle. Ardagh is closing its beer market-oriented Houston facility and laying off 220 workers, effective July 1, per a June 24 Texas WARN notice. The company is also at least temporarily laying off another 244 employees effective July 1 as it halts production at a Seattle facility serving wine customers, according to a June 17 Washington WARN notice.
- Bryce Co., a Memphis, Tennessee-based packaging manufacturer for food, pet care, health and beauty customers, is permanently closing a portion of its hometown operations. In a filing with the state on June 4, the company said 104 layoffs at a Memphis site would occur between Aug. 8 and Dec. 31. The company said in a press release that the products made at that facility are also manufactured elsewhere in its network, “which will provide a seamless transition to Bryce Corporation’s customers,” and the company will still have more than 200 employees in the area. Bryce said impacted employees would be offered a retention bonus, severance package, continuation of benefit coverage and job placement assistance.
- Mauser Packaging Solutions will conduct layoffs at a site in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, according to a June WARN notice filed with the state. Layoffs will impact 77 employees, effective Sept. 6. This follows Mauser announcements in May that it would close facilities in Ohio and Wisconsin and exit U.S. aerosol can manufacturing.
- McKinley Paper Co. is permanently laying off 190 employees at a paper mill in Port Angeles, Washington, according to a June 25 WARN notice. The layoffs are effective Aug. 25. In an email to employees covered by Peninsula Daily News, Operations Director Isaac Rosas reportedly said that McKinley hoped to resume operations at some point. PDN reported that a few jobs will extend beyond Aug. 25 to maintain the facility. McKinley operates paper and packaging plants throughout the United States.
- Tupperware announced in June that 148 employees will be laid off at its Hemingway, South Carolina, facility, as it shuts down its sole U.S. plant and moves manufacturing to Mexico. The layoffs are schedule to occur between Sept. 28 and Jan. 14, 2025.
- WestRock is closing a site in Corona, California, per a June 19 WARN notice. It will result in layoffs to 77 employees effective Aug. 18. According to WestRock’s website this location is a printing and manufacturing site.
